Ukrainian IT Industry 2019-2020: $5 billion and 200,000 specialists

Ukrainian IT-company N-iX has published the domestic tech market report. AIN.UA made a summary of the most interesting data.

Ukrainian IT market in numbers

  • ICT is the third largest exporter of services with a 20% share of total Ukrainian service exports.
  • Ukrainian IT industry grows by about 26% year over year.
  • There are about 4,000 IT companies operating on the market.
  • There are about 1,600 IT service companies operating in Ukraine.
  • The number of IT professionals surpassed 185,000 in 2018.
  • According to experts’ projections, revenues in the IT industry will amount to $5 billion in 2019.

Human capital

According to experts’ projections, in 2019, the number of IT professionals in Ukraine will be about 200,000 people. Next year, the number of IT specialists will increase by 20,000.

Most of Ukrainian IT specialists live in Kyiv (68,500), Lviv (21,000), and Kharkiv (25,000).

Outsourcing

More than 60% of all the above-mentioned specialists are employed by IT outsourcing companies. At the same time, the number of startups (over 2,000 companies) and international R&D centers (over 100 companies) is growing.

Ukrainian outsourcers cooperate mainly with companies from the USA (81% of all service consumers). These can be both startups at the bootstrap stage and tech giants. Among the companies in an outsourcing portfolio of Ukrainians are isco, IBM, Atlassian, Travelport, OpenText, Fluke Corporation, etc.

Often, outsourcing teams that work for Western clients grow into full-fledged R&D centers for their clients.

Labor market

The IT labor market is growing rapidly.

  • In 2018, the number of jobs posted on DOU has increased from 3,000 to 4,500 a month.
  • The number of applications went up by 23% — from 270,000 to 330,000.
  • The number of employers grew by 38% — from 2,400 to 3,300.
  • The most in-demand IT specialists are Front-end, QA, and PHP, as these categories constitute 31% of all vacancies.

Ukrainian IT companies are actively increasing their staff and are opening offices in new locations. The most popular locations are Kyiv, Lviv, and Rivne.

At the same time, Ukrainian IT companies started working abroad and have been opening offices in Malaga, Berlin, Warsaw, Krakow, Toronto, Turin, London, Bucharest, Eindhoven, Chicago, etc.
