Europe wants Ukraine to prepare for negotiations

During his visit to Romania, French President Emmanuel Macron said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Ukrainian officials would be forced to sit down at the negotiating table with Putin and his Russian counterparts. In his opinion, this is a necessary step to end the war.

Macron also added that he recognizes Russia as an aggressor, and that France and other European countries support Ukraine in this war and will continue to provide their support, both financially and militarily.

However, Macron’s rhetoric seems incomprehensible to the Ukrainian government and a number of European partners. In particular, Macron said earlier that the world should not humiliate Russia and Putin “should not lose face.”

Macron, as well as German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, are expected to visit Kyiv in mid-June with possible proposals for peace agreements with Russia. Insiders suspect that European politicians may offer Zelensky to cede some territories to gain peace. Ukraine has repeatedly said that it is not ready to surrender its territories, remembering Europe in 1938: then France and Britain gave Hitler part of Czechoslovakia so as not to start a war, which began a year later.

It is noteworthy that today the United States supported the idea of creating a separate defense alliance between Ukraine, Poland, the Baltic states and Britain. In this way, the United States seems to be pointing out to European politicians that they are losing their leadership status in Europe.
