Startup of the Day: Mamio, a Czech mobile app for moms

Mamio is a Prague-based startup that provides a mobile app that connects like-minded moms. It was founded in 2022, by Laureen HöllgeJohana Šperlová, and Karel Hrdina. Its main goal is to allow mothers to meet each other by baby age and location and share motherhood experience. In February this year, Mamio received €300,000 round led by Czech Founders VC.

In the Startup of the Day column, Laureen Höllge, co-founder of Mamio, shares the details about the startup’s idea, its product, and future plans.

The Startup of the Day column on AIN is dedicated to tech projects from all sectors that originate from the CEE countries. If you would like to introduce your project, please fill in the questionnaire.

Tell us about your startup. How does it work?

Mamio is a mobile app for moms. Currently, moms can connect with each other on Mamio based on the age of their child and location, as well as find support throughout motherhood on a redefined forum.

In the future, Mamio will add a motherhood guide personalized by the age of the child and a personalised recommendation system for products and services. Mamio’s added value is that it can create a friendly environment for mothers, and most importantly, provide personalized support.

How did you come up with the startup’s idea? What was the reason/motivation behind it?

We live in the age when there is an app for everything. Yet mothers (especially in the CEE and DACH region) still have to rely on old-fashioned parenting forums. We wanted to change that and provide them with personalised support always in their pocket.

How long did it take to reach the prototype or MVP? What did you encounter?

We launched our MVP in 6 months after having started working on it. The MVP launch was super smooth. What suprised us was that we had thousands of moms signed up for the product launch which showed us that we really tapped into a need that does not have a proper solution yet.

When exactly did you launch your product? Or when the launch is planned?

We launched the MVP in the beginning of 2023. Now, we work on both mobile platforms and we have tens of thousands more users and new functionalities as well.

Tell us about the startup’s business model. How do you monetize your product?

The application is free for users. The app will generate revenue through a personalized recommendation system, selecting products and services that can facilitate motherhood for moms and offering them curated options.

Today, it’s challenging for moms to choose the right equipment for themselves and their child. We can help them choose products and services based on the child’s age and maternal philosophy, and through partnerships, we can offer them special benefits for using such products and services,

Mamio already has dozens of partners, and more are carefully being selected.

What are your target markets and consumers?

Our team is building the product in Czechia before expanding to the broader region.

If the startup has already launched the product, what are the results: metrics, income, or any clear indicators that can be evaluated.

Currently, we have 20,000 users who come to us without significant marketing expenditure and who are above average loyal and engaged to the app.

What about your team? How many people are working in the startup? If you’re looking for new employees, indicate whom exactly.

We have 4 core members and 6 externists helping us build the product.

Have you already raised any investments? Provide us with more details on each funding round: the amount, investors, the purpose of the investment.

Yes, in February 2024, we closed a pre-seed funding round of €300,000 (7.4 million crowns):

  • €200,000 of it are provided by Czech Founders VC
  • another €100,000 are provided by Prague-based VC fund PurposeTech.

We also received support worth €60,000 as part of the Technology Incubation from CzechInvest.

What’s next? Tell us about your future plans.

Mamio’s team is finetuning new functionalities and preparing for expansion, so stay tuned.
